Fuel consumption dropped 33%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuel consumption dropped 33%!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Postby bobbyd on Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:30 pm

My fuel consumption was between 13.9 and 15/100km and now it hovers just over 10/100 and I am super stoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did this happen you ask? I was having a whinge to Andy about the fuel usage and he suggested checking the mixture which was WAY WAY off.
Now the fuel usage is right where it should be!!!!! and the smoking at the traffic lights has gone too!

And why didnt I check this when I first got the Niva?
well I have read and continue to read so many posts about high fuel consumption and worn valve seals so I made an assumption.I have had my brain in neutral too long!!!
I have run 6 tanks through with the adjustments done in similar driving condition as before and all good!

Thanks again Andy!

R/H side of carb there is two adjustment screws, Idle RPM and mixture,
Mixture is the smaller one,
Screw it all the way in then out 2 1/2 turns. ( mine was 8 1/4!)
There may be plastic caps over both of these screw to stop them vibrating out and/or people playing with them.

take it you mean all the way out then in 2 1/2, think mine is a little different cause it's a weber. 2 screws bout the same size, one pushes on the thing that the choke cable connects to and one does not, any idea which is which? Also will the 2 1/2 turn trick work with the weber?
cheers

Hey Bob , thanks for your post it's the same problem I've got with my Niva so looks like I'll be checking the mixture and making any adjustments that are needed .
Cheers Steve .

ok found some instructions for adjusting the mixture with a weber, seems fairly self explanatory except the bit that says before you start you need to make sure the "vacuum lines are plugged off", does anyone know if this just means disconnected or blocked off somehow or what?
Cheers

will that work for the weber? the instructions on baxter's site are much more complicated involving fiddling with the screws while the engine is running? What should I do?

Just returned from a 500km trip which returned an average of 12/100km, which included plenty of steep, winding,2nd gear, uphill, downhill, high altitude driving as well as 1 3/4 hrs idleing in traffic trying to get over the west gate bridge!
And I discovered the vacum advance wasnt working!
not bad all things considered

Geelong to mt Bawbaw and back.

that sounds good I'm still getting 15l per 100km, cant seem to find the mixture screw which is probably sort of dumb, can find the idle adjustment screw but no other obvious adjustable screws it seems?

Yep, the "bench" setting for D Webers is also 2-1/2 turns out from the bottom. But that's a rough bench tune, the exact mixture point will be somewhere between 1-1/2 and 2-1/2 turns if your jets are correct.

For best results do the mixture the proper way with the engine running (as described on my site and many others); here's a good one that also tells you how to work out if your jets are too big or small: http://www.redlineweber.com/html/Tech/c ... _best_.htm
