Niva carb suitable for blow-through supercharging?

Postby Chua on Sun Aug 23, 2009 10:36 pm

I have been reading about supercharging options for the niva.
I know scottie is one of those interested as well. From what i gather, the Volumex supercharger is one possible bolt on solution (a draw thru step) but getting a hold on this supecharger may not be easy or cheap. They are used formally in the old Fiat 131. Centrifugal types are only useful if you are going for a rally, so thts out. Eaton types (another roots type supercharger) may be a better option but this requires a blow through setup. My question is - Would the niva carb be able to take a blow-through setup (or pressurizing the whole carb in a box)?

cheap, easy to get and japanese quality.
Acouple of hundred bucks on ebay>
or a SC-14 (low boost is for kids?)

SC12, Custom manifold, carby on top. There's been a few race lada's with turbos and superchargers fitted. I reckon the 1600 would be perfect. I'm saving for the setup now, trust me..! not buying anymore ladas 4 is enough.

Yes. I think the niva engine would be good to have a bit more power, and I think it can take it. Just that the compression ration is 8.5:1, so its best not to go above 6-7psi boost. Anything more you will need an engine with a smaller compression ratio, else it will detonate, particularly in aussie summer weather. What im looking for is power at the low revs, that will certainly help if the niva is bogged, and I dont wanna rev it to above 3000 to get that sort of power, the clutch will go pretty quickly....

checked that the sc12 seem to give a 7-8psi boost? May have to downsize the pulley abit

I would imagine a custom pulley would have to be fabbed up or an existing pulley modified to fit the lada block. Getting back to your original question, I Don't think the original carb would be suitable - not sure if it would supply enough fuel at high RPM's.

The power your looking for is more suited to the SC12 over the SC14 as the smaller displacement (1200cc vs 1400cc) charger can spool up boost quicker. I'm expecting the Lada donk make around 120hp and 160-180nm with SC12 and appropriate carb fitted.

Although - Don't be affraid to rev the lada engine! They are very very tough units, They are alot more responsive at higher revs. I regularly find myself changing gears at 5000rpms and revving the engine -upto- 6500rpms. - confidently.

Guess the sc12 is probably the best way to go...and doable. Plus, dont have to mess around with the existing carby connections much. If dont like it or doesnt work, just swap the old setup bk on.

But with all that weight on the RH side of the engine, also might need to think about changing the RH rubber damper to a much stiffer one. As of now, it is already heavier on the RH side.

I read on a french thing a 1600 with 6 psi gave about 120hp and 8psi about 160hp, this was done with a turbo off a renault 18.
My preferance would be a SC12 too, relitively straight forward, I put a SC14 on my carby hiace a few years ago, it would easily drag 3 people, three dirtbikes and all our shit, Could have been better if I put more refinement into the equation or a later efi engine but you know the story!!

I've read the same article bobby pretty sure they were competition niva's and tried convincing lada to produce a factory turbo 1600. Chua good thinking on the engine mount, although the rubber compound used is apparently a secret cold war russian mixture of Resins - very strong. Same stuff they use for all the mounts and maybe the rubber donut? (anyone confirm).

People do use stock lada engine mounts with fiat twin cam engines which I would imagine being a good 10-15kg heavier than the lada donk?

SC14 would provide more air at a lower RPM so that could be a plus, therefore creating peak torque lower in the RPM band, we all want that.

the Sc12 was meant for a 1600 engine, but the Sc14 was for a 2litre engine isnt it? A little too risky for me...
And scottie, was thinking more about the balance with more weight on one side...possibly make the engine rock n roll like hell.

Dont worry about the engine mount, just whack the super charger on, adjust pulley size to put peak torque at 3000-3500 RPM, (this can be done on paper before hand) monitor EGT while running under various conditions/loads/MAPs and richen the mixture to keep the EGT at a realistic temp.

hey all, ive scourced a sc14 with a v-drive belt pully already on it and its running with the clutch setup. my idea was to bolt up the charger with some pluming to the carb (blow through setup) and just run the charger off a switch when i come up to hills, highways or anything when it needs a kick in the pants. ive seen this exact same idea/setup on a stock vn commodore so am just wondering if it could apply to the niva.

my question would be, would the motor choke when the charger is off because of how far it has to draw air through?

sime.

Personally my guess is that, with a fair bit of tuning, the clutch setup might work on the niva carb. But the problem would probably be like this - To compensate for the supercharger, you will most likely need to retard your timing to prevent pre-ignition (unless you are using some racing fuel, the standard niva is already going on premium, otherwise you might need ice in the air intake) So under "off status" on road, the niva has even worse power than standard. ie. I dont think you can have the best of both worlds if you try to have an off/on switch. Its probably better to have it "on" all the time, and tune it where you get the best power/ fuel efficiency. This is my take on it. Not sure about what the experts here have to say.
