Oil leak observed around the LH wheel base plate.

Postby Chua on Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:02 pm

I recently have noticed an oil leak around the LH wheel base plate.
I had my wheel cylinders changed recently and I thought maybe it was due to a faulty new cylinder.
But there was no drop in the brake fluid, and I think it my fears maybe true and that it is the LH gland seal of the axle that could be leaking. Anybody have advice on this problem? Could it be fixed easily with home mechanic tools or do I need to send it to a shop?

No one here had the same problem before?

My only worry is that there is a bigger problem that is causing this gland to wear out, such as the axle shaft bearing. The problem is that the bearings are held in place by the lockring and its a hell of a job since need to find a press and specially made jig to remove/ install that lockring. If someone here has a similar experience before, any advice here would be really appreciated.

when you jack wheel off ground, just see if you have any play.

replacing seal is no biggy, most peeps do it themselves.

seal could just be worn with age,or someone has removed & replaced axle without replacing seal.

diff hadn't been o/filled too much with the 85/140??

also check breather on top of diff isn't jammed.

remember,of oil can leak out, water etc.can get in.

No overfilling. t was leaking before I had my first oil change.
I will check the breather.
But if the bearings are sealed bearings.
Wont that usually stop the leak too if the gland fails?
Like you said if oil can leak, water can go in. Surely the water should not go through sealed bearings.
