just wondering if people who can weld can offer an opinion on how difficult it is to learn to weld to a good enough standard to do decent rust repairs. I have been finding it very difficult to get someone to come out and do some welding for me so I am considering buying a welder and working out how to do it myself. Is it realistic to get up to or reasonable standard in a couple of weekend of fiddling around? or does it take a lot of work to get the hang of it? Oh and if it is a option, how much should I spend on a welder?

OR

Buy a little MIG and stuff around on some scrap metal.
Post up pics of the welder, and the welds you've run, and we'll make the adjustments for ya!

cool time to go welder shopping. Any tips, gas or gasless? how many amp do i need?

WIA or CIG, are about the best, but most of the little "toy" welders will do it for you for a little while at least.
Do however, avoid the ones with push-button adjustments ... dial-up ONLY.

Gasless is ok, but the welds need more cleaning up afterwards.
All welding in the two links I posted were done gasless.
Gasless wire is more expensive than plain wire, but is offset by no requirement for gas and associated bottle hire, although I do believe you can now get disposable bottles.

Gas will give you a neater weld, and far more versatility.

Spend the money on one of the better - name brand - Auto helmets, and wear gloves and full covered clothing. Otherwise you will have some bad sunburn and be wondering how the hell that happened!
