Stereo installation and central locking

Postby Duke Peterson on Sun Aug 10, 2008 2:46 pm

I am about to install a nice stereo in my new lada and i am just wondering if anybody has has done this before and if they have any hot tips. I am hoping to install a set of 6x9s in the back behind the wheel arches but am yet to peel off the interior lining to see if there is any room. The annoying ridge under the seat looks like it will make installing the amplifier tricky too. Also a lot of people seem to modify the alternator in their nivas so i am wondering if running a 400w amp will be asking to much of my original alternator? I also figure that while i am in my doors installing the front speakers i may as well chuck in a central locking kit, does anyone know if the cheap generic central locking kits work in nivas?
Cheers

Not too sure about central locking kits, although I'm looking to do the same, I've got the soft top 89 model niva, have a wooden shelf in the back where I've installed a set of 6x9's, roughly in line with the top of the rear seats. seems to do the job well. let me know if you find a central locking kit :)

Sterio isn't all that hard, just better off pulling the centre console, where the sterio fits, pull it off, and all the cables are pretty easy to find, and modify, let me know if you have any issues...

Should be fairly straightforward, I've got C/L fitted to my Fiat 124 AC. So, so similar to a Niva.Getting the bundle of wiring to swing in a Niva door jamb is interesting to say the least. Look thru wreckers in Jap doors as some have excellent premade tubes. Some long ones that twist making the holes about 20cm apart vertically in the door frame. Sure to be free at a wrecker near you.
As for mounting subs, I found it easier to use a premade box held down at four points. Beating on a Niva with that much weight getting airborne does funny things to our headshape. If it's detachable, you still get to use the very limited carrying space.
To the optomist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the Engineer, the glass is twice the size it has to be.

The stereo and remote central locking is all installed and working after about 25 hours of stuffing around. Got a generic Schneider remote central locking kit for about $80 that went in without to much hassle. As for the wires in the door i just drilled out the existing holes a bit and used the conduit that came with the central locking kit and that seems to work fine. There is also a nice spot for the 6x9 s behind the wheel well in the back which is possibly a bit neater than having them hanging of a board and also gets a better sound as you have a proper contained speaker box.
