speedo cable

Postby bobbyd on Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:28 pm

I have just installed a new speedo cable, easy as! except now the speedo wont go, this is where the adventure starts.
It seems the square drive"dick" at the transfer case end dosent protrude enough, this protrusion is set by the flange at the other end of cause.
I have tried all sorts of routeing to eliminate bends and even have had the cable lying on the floor so its straight but the drive is still not protrudeing enough to be driven by the speedo drive.
I have discovered the drive shaft sticking of the transfer case has 3-4mm fore-aft movement, but even with the shaft forward the cable still wont engage.
The internal square drive in the drive shaft is a few mm in.

Bright ideas anyone?

Have you compared the protrusion measurement with the old one ?

Is the new one "new" ? Or might it have had its drive square trimmed to present a "new" (non rounded) end ?

Is there a spacer or thrust washer missing ?

Ummmmmmmmmmmm........... without seeing it I can't guess anything else !

The old one is rooted and it broke an inch in so I cant use it for a reference.
Nah its around the correct way.
I will pull the cover off the T/C later today and have a nosey in there,I changed the gasket there and now this so I have to look,

Sussed (thanks Andy)

And sort of on the same subject the cover on the T/C can be rotated around and mounted in three different positions so I'm thinking I will rotate mine so the drive output is in a more comfortable angle for the speedo cable.
L/H upper position instead of L/H lower. The cable wont foul on anything here
Anyone else done this?
